- That's the tradeoff - I was able to get more lines quickly with the
- capital I had available by getting Supras (US$159/modem), but I've had
- more headaches than I'd prefer in the bargain.
-
- The Supras are very nice for the user end, but for the provider's end they
- leave a bit to be desired. Sportsters & Global Village modems don't like
- them at all. Most other modems like them well enough ... until it rains,
- and then folks with other Supras or USR Couriers continue to do fine but
- the ones with lesser modems start having great difficulty connecting and
- we start getting "I can't connect" and "I can connect but I keep getting
- dumped" support calls.
-
- Our lines with USR Couriers & Hayes Optimas have been lovely - no problems
- there. I'm optimistic that the Hayes Century racks we're putting in will
- be at least as good, and if they are, we'll pull the Supras and sell them
- to our users & put Hayes rackmounts in their place.
-
- In addition to performance issues, rack-mounts have a lot going for them
- in the neatness department. A couple hundred standalone modems are not a
- pretty sight from a wiring point of view ...
